Telepathy

The last I heard from my friend Thomas, he was testing a promising prototype for a telepathy device. I ran into him at our local bar last night. He wouldn't tell me how the device was going until I bought him two Coronas and let him beat me at pool. Buying people drinks is the best way to extract information.

"It works," he said, disappointed. "Mostly, everyone thinks about the same thing, and it's not sex or secrets or the fundamental structure of the universe. We're thinking about regulating our breathing, and small constant muscular adjustments to avoid falling. We're also scanning what we see, which involves a lot of complex thought, and ignoring what we smell. Sometimes we're recognizing faces."

He looked at me and sighed.
